Phulchoki Day Hike Overview

Phulchowki Day Hike is a great day excursion destination for those who do not want to spend multiple days trekking but wish to witness the snow-capped Himalayas in Nepal. Phulchowki Hill is the highest hill that encircles the Kathmandu Valley standing at an elevation of 2750 meters above sea level. This hill station is located just 20 kilometers from the city and is well-known for providing visitors with beautiful vistas that are truly enchanting.

"Phulchowki" means "hill full of flowers," in Nepali. Indeed, it is a wonderful site that comes alive in the springtime as the vibrant petals, painted with the hues of sunshine carpet the entire hill with its enchanting tapestry. Many varieties from trees to shrubs, wildflowers, and beautiful rhododendron and magnolia are in full bloom. Likewise, during the winter, this hill becomes a snow beauty draped in a soft, simmering white veil.

It is a magnificent scenic spot to get away from city life for a day and be in intimate harmony with nature. It is a place where one may breathe fresh, pure country air while taking in breathtaking vistas of the Himalayan Mountain range. The hill station provides a wonderful view of high Himalayan peaks including Annapurna and Manaslu peaks in the far west, and the enormous Ganesh, Langtang, and Jugal Himal range in the middle north, as well as vistas of Mt. Everest and its range to the east.

The Phulchowki Day Hike begins, with a short drive to Godawari which lies at the base of the hill. The trail winds uphill through lush foliage and tall trees, passing through a few small farms and villages. The journey progresses through the dense vegetation till the summit of Phulchowki Hill, the highest point in the area offering a bird's eye perspective of Kathmandu Valley and nearby villages, as well as astonishing Himalayan views.

Aside from the breathtaking views of Kathmandu Valley and the surrounding stunning sceneries and Snowy Mountains, the area is also well-known for bird-watching. You can see a variety of birds such as Rufous-gorged, Yellow-browed Tit, Chestnut-headed Tesia, Rufous-bellied Niltava, Red-billed Leiothrix, different species of butterflies, and wild animals, resulting in the hill as an excellent site for botanists and naturalists. The hikers can also observe the religious ceremony happening at the Phulchowki Mai Temple which is located on this hilltop during March or April.

In a nutshell, the Phulchowki Day Hike allows visitors to explore the naturally rich sceneries and biodiversity on such a peaceful trail, which indeed makes their holiday splendid, and memorable, with soft adventure and enjoyment.

Phulchowki Day Hike Highlights

  • An amazing journey to the highest hill around the Kathmandu Valley
  • Sublime views of the Himalayas such as the Annapurna ranges and Gaurishankar
  • The peaceful and rich Botanical Garden
  • Opportunity to witness different species of birds, butterflies, and wildlife
  • Phulchowki Mai Temple, an important Hindu pilgrimage site on the top of the hill

Best Time to Do Phulchowki Day Hike

Phulchowki Day Hike can be done any month of the year. However, the finest seasons are spring and autumn owing to its blue skies and clear views.

March through May is one of the best seasons for clear views and it is when the wildflowers are in bloom, especially red Rhododendrons and magnolia, and the mountains are spectacular. The day will be lovely, with a cool morning and evening. Also, during March or April, there is a month-long religious celebration at the Phulchowki Mai Temple which could be a unique experience for the visitors.

The fall months, September to early December are great for mountain vistas as well as landscape views. The days are clear, stable, and warm with cooler mornings and evenings. The hiking trail is at its best with few local and international companions. The entire trail is covered with amber hues making the hiking experience surreal.

The rainy season which also is summer in Nepal runs from June to August. Hiking during these months is possible and offers stunning views. But when it is raining, it is best to avoid the hike because the heavy rainfall makes the trail slick and slippery. The views are obstructed by the cloud as well.

Hiking to Phulchowki hill station in the winter allows hikers to enjoy the snowfall. Also, during the winter months, the views of the snow-capped mountains are the most attractive. But it is important to travel with a professional guide and proper gear as the trail could be slippery.

GearList

Clothing/Equipment/Gear for Day Hike around Kathmandu

Kathmandu Valley is surrounded by beautiful hill stations around its perimeter. So it is of no surprise that Kathmandu is popular for day hikes. Phulchowki is the highest hill surrounding Kathmandu Valley located at an altitude of 2750 meters above sea level. To help you pack efficiently, we have prepared a gear list for Phulchowki Hike based on seasons. Nepal has four primary seasons:-

Winter: Winter in Nepal falls in January and February. It starts getting cooler after Christmas. The temperature is usually 0-4°C in the morning, 10-12°C at noon, and -1 to 0°C at night. So if you are planning to hike here any time after Christmas to the end of February then we suggest you wear long-sleeved t-shirts, hoodies, or sweater/fleece, windproof and preferably waterproof jackets because Phulchowki has temporary snowfall during winter. Similarly, we suggest wearing beanies/hats, gloves, trousers, sports shoes/hiking hoots, and thermals if you prefer an extra layer of warmth. Carrying a water bottle, sunglasses, sunscreen, and hiking poles would be ideal.

Spring: March to May are spring in Nepal. The temperature in these months during the morning ranges from 10-12°C, 22-24°C at noon, and 14-16°C at night. Since the weather is pleasant during spring, apart from the essentials mentioned below, all you need is some casual shirts, shorts or trousers, a couple of long sleeves, sports shoes/hiking boots, a water bottle, sunscreen, a sun hat/cap, sunglasses, and an overall/light jacket because it might get a bit chilly at the top.

Summer/Monsoon: June, July, August, and September are summer months in Nepal. But we have a summer monsoon that occurs from mid-June to Mid-September. The temperature of Kathmandu ranges from 18-20 °C in the morning, 28-32°C at noon, and 16-18°C at night. We do not suggest you hike while raining but apart from that, Summer Hiking in Phulchowki is ideal too.  So, besides the regular items mentioned below, casual cotton wear, sunglasses, a sun hat/cap, an umbrella, or a raincoat are some essentials for the summer. Because this hike takes place in a lush forest, there might be some leeches if it rains the previous night. These leeches aren’t harmful but might cause nuisance so the trick is to carry salt and if leeches try and stick to your body then you could sprinkle salt.

Autumn/Fall: October, November, and December are autumn in Nepal. It is the best time for the Phulchowki hike due to the delightful weather and visibility of beautiful vistas seen along the way and from the hilltop. The temperature of Phulchowki during fall ranges from 8-10 °C in the morning, 22-25°C at noon, and 5-7°C at night. December is comparatively cooler than the other two months. While hiking around Kathmandu during fall, you would be good to go with fleece/sweater or hoodies, hat/beanie, shawl/scarf, trousers, long-sleeved shirts, light jackets, or overalls, a water bottle, sunglasses, sunscreen, and hiking boots or sports shoes.

Pulchowki day hike

Since I was a solo female traveler I really wanted to get out and do a day hike to Pulchowki forest to spend some time in nature. My guide BK was great at navigating the trail and getting to the top of the mountain. He even carried all the great snacks and we had tea at the top. I imagine the view is fantastic on a clear day but unfortunately it was a bit cloudy. However I highly recommend the hike if you are interested in birding or just seeing some forested areas outside of Kathmandu. I don't reccomend going to visit this area without a guide, and being alone it was great to have a guide. BK was wonderful company and even took me to the botanical gardens after the hike. I highly recommend this company as they were professional, prompt, and seem to have great guides.

Kathmandu valley

Our Guide pradeep was really amazing and we really enjoyed his company and his knowledge. As we hocked through the small traditional villages he explained the history and the habits of the people in the villages, telling us about the animals and the birds in the areas we hiked. You can feel that he loved his work but more than that, he loves his country. Because of the great experience with him we booked him for two separate hickes.
His driver was also really good especially off road driving, getting us safely to the start of the hike and picking us up at the end.

Pulchoki day hike

Enjoyable day hike with excellent guide. The route follows either a dirt road or a steeper narrow trail, and I enjoyed the narrow trail more.
Unfortunately, it was too hazy to see the mountains, which was a real disappointment.
Also, this trail-- although it is a protected wilderness area-- is absolutely full of discarded trash which is heartbreaking. Highly recommend that the guides and local authorities take some collaborative action to remove it.
