Chele la Nature Trek Bhutan Overview

The Chele La Trek is a popular trekking route in Bhutan, a total of 12 days, which takes you all the way up to the Chele La pass (3700 meters).

The trekking trail goes through the forest filled with blooming primula plants, dense rhododendron trees, steep ascents and descents crossing several villages and towns of Bhutan.

We come across several monasteries, will see stunning landscapes, lush green forest, a peaceful environment, and spectacular and eye-catching views of Mount Jumolhari, Jichu Drake and Tsherimgang mountains.

Rated as moderate level in trip grade, 3-4 hrs of minimum walk every day is required for the trek, nevertheless, first-timers can also enjoy the trek with proper guidance.

Shortly after you land at Paro, you go sightseeing. The next day you drive to Chonana followed by Jebkarpo, Lower Mingula, Thong, Thimpu, Punakha or Wangdiphodrang, and finally back to Paro. Lastly, you take a connecting flight back to your home.

Itinerary Details

Day 1: Arrival at Paro.
30 min private drive.
Max Altitude: 2200 m

After arrival at Paro, a representative from Himalayan trekkers will greet, meet and transfer you to the hotel where you will be staying overnight. During the flight, you will experience breathtaking views of Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga, and other famous Himalayan peaks.

Day 2: Sightsee Paro
4-5 Hrs
Max Altitude: 2200 m

After breakfast drive to the National Museum. Visit the Rinpung and Drugyal Dzong. Also, visit Kyichu Monastery which is located between Drugyal Dzong and Paro town.

Later in the evening, we will have last minutes discussion of trek and a short briefing about out upcoming days.

Day 3: Trek to Chonana
4-5 hrs

After breakfast, you will drive to Olathang from where we will begin our trek. Most of the days walk is a gradual climb through the pine forests. Along the trail, we pass through some beautiful farmhouses built in a typical Bhutanese architect. The view of the Paro valley from the trail is also excellent.

Day 4: Trek to Jebkarpo

Today, we will be moving uphill most of the day with good rest and cross the Chele La pass (3700m). The trail goes through the forest filled with Primula, rhododendron and many other species of plants and trees. 

After crossing the pass, the trail goes along the ridge of Chele La with a clear view of the Himalayan mountain ranges.

Day 5: Trek to Lower Mingula
5-6 hrs
Max Altitude: 3750 m

After early breakfast, we will follow the ridge valley trail which offers great mountain scenery  of Mt. Jomolhari, Jichu Drake, Tshrim Gang and bird eyes views of Paro and Haa valley. We will take gradual step by step taking pictures, enjoying the scenery and strop for lunch before reaching Lower Mingula.

Day 6: Trek to Thong
5-6 hrs
Max Altitude: 3650 m

This day will also offer excellent views of the mountains and valleys, sometimes come across a Yak herder’s camp. We can visit one of the camps and enjoy their company. As a tradition, they will offer butter tea or Chang (local wine).

Day 7: Short descend to Drukgyel and drive to Thimpu via Paro.
2 hrs trek and 2-3 hrs drive.
Max Altitude: 2400 m

Today, we will have a short descend through the pine forest up to Drukgyal Dzong and drive to Paro. The trail will descend all the way through pine and rhododendron forest. After delicious lunch, we will drive towards Thimpu.

Drive to Thimphu is 2-3 hours and will be a pleasant one mainly due to the luxurious Japanese transportation and well-maintained road throughout Bhutan. Upon arrival check into our hotel.

Day 8: Thimphu Sightseeing
5-6 Hrs
Max Altitude: 2334 m

After breakfast, there will be a full day of sightseeing around Thimphu. We next visit the Memorial Chorten built in memory of the late King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, 15-century Changangkha monastery, Motithang mini zoo to see the rare "Takin" (national animal of Bhutan) and drive further down with a good view of the Thimphu valley. 

We also make a visit to Tashichho Dzong, Handicrafts Emporium, Painting and woodcraft school, the Memorial Chorten National Library and Simtokha Dzong.

Day 9: Drive to Punakha and Explore
3-4 hrs drive
Max Altitude: 1242 m

After a scenic drive in the morning, we will reach Punakha - former capital of Bhutan. Here we visit the Dzongs, as well as other interesting sites and return back to Thimpu.

Day 10: Scenic Drive to Paro
2 hrs drive
Max Altitude: 2200 m

Good leisure time to stroll Thimpu in the morning. After lunch, drive to Paro and en route visit Simtokha Dzong (the oldest Dzong in Bhutan built in 1629 AD). Evening visit a traditional farmhouse which offers an opportunity to mingle with local and to get an idea on their lifestyle.

Day 11: Paro sightseeing

Drive to Taktsang Monastery. Taktsang is one of the most venerated pilgrim sites of the Himalayan world.  It is located on the cliffside of the upper Paro valley and has been a symbol of representing Bhutan almost everywhere. 

You are free to explore the local markets for souvenirs later in the evening.

Day 12: Final Departure

Generally, in cities like Paro, we arrange basic three-star facilities. If available, you can opt for a more budget-friendly option or upgrade to a more luxurious hotel by paying a little extra. 

Although all the places might not have all the modern facilities, we will make sure to arrange safe and comfortable accommodation. In general, hygienic and safe tea houses/local lodges/ home-stays with all the basic facilities are arranged. But you can, if possible, personalize according to your preference.

Breakfast is usually included with your B&B Accommodation within the cost that is evident.

For other meals in the city, you would have to pay separately. Often in the cities, you can choose from many different cuisines and varied food services. We can always help you find the right place to fit your taste.

In more remote areas, usually, there are not many options. But you can always find hygienic and well-prepared food. Moreover, almost all the meals during the trek are included in the cost. We can help you make changes according to your preference and budget, but only if choices are available!
On top of that, Himalayan Trekkers also organizes Welcome and Farewell Dinners as a symbol of warm greetings.
