The 10 Best Photography Spots on the Everest Base Camp Trail

Here, we have listed ten absolute best photography spots along the Everest Base Camp trek, in the order you will experience them starting from Lukla.

Lukla Airport

Lukla Airport is literally the spot from where your Everest Base Camp trek and your photography journey begin. Known as the Tenzing-Hillary Airport, this is regarded as one of the most exciting airports in the world, with the runway spanning only 527 m.

As soon as you step out of your small plane, you will find Mount Kongde Ri (6187 m) standing majestically in front of you. And, if you take a short walk beyond the airport, you will find a narrow stone trail filled with bakeries, trekking shops, and traditional lodges.

Busy porters, crowds of tourists, and local Sherpas will create a very bustling atmosphere here. From this location, you can capture candid photos of Kongde Ri, Naulekh Peak, and the Kalo Himal Ridge.

Additionally, the runway hanging by the cliff edge and the dancing prayer flags will create splendid storytelling photographs for you.

This is why we ensure that our guests do not rush as soon as they land in Lukla. We always provide them 15 to 20 minutes to explore this village and capture beautiful shots.

Best Spot: Lukla Airport Viewpoint just behind the main airport

Hilary Suspension Bridge

This iconic bridge, named after heroic Sir Edmuind Hilary, is located just before the challenging steep ascent to Namche Bazaar. This bridge is 60 m long and sways above the rushing currents of Bhote Koshi and Dudh Koshi.

It is a double-tiered bridge decorated with dancing prayer flags that also offers a beautiful spectacle of Mount Taboche (6495 m). Along with the peak, you can also look below the gorgeous river canyon of Dudh Koshi and the wide caravan of yaks and local porters.

We have found that many of our guests, as soon as they reach the bridge, instantly take out their camera. However, the best spot is not in the middle of the bridge.

If you like to capture the long lines of trekkers, yak caravan, and the river gorge, then we suggest you cross the bridge first and descend to the riverbank trail below. From here, you can take images of trekkers traversing the upper suspension bridge.

Best Spot: Down to the river trail and on your ascent for about 10 to 15 minutes

Top Danda/Everest View Point

Top Danda at 3140 m elevation sits along the trail between Hilary Bridge and Namche Bazaar. We lead many of our guests to this viewpoint for a 15- to 20-minute rest before resuming their ascent to Namche.

The trail to Top Danda is around 600 m long from the bridge, and it may take around 1 to 1.5 hours to reach this viewpoint located on the ridge. The trail will meander through the dense pine forest of Sagarmatha National Park.

Once you reach the viewpoint, open clearing views will greet you along with stone resting benches. Resting here, enjoy and click photos of Mount Everest (8848.86 m) peeking over the Lhotse (8516 m) and Nuptse (7861 m) peaks for the first time on the trail.

The lush green pine forest, dusty stone trail, and white Himalayas will create an absolute multidimensional shot for you. You can also photograph prayer flags, grazing yaks, traditional stone houses, and other hikers on the route.

Best Spot: The Viewpoint itself

Namche Bazaar

Namche Bazaar is an important acclimatization spot on the Everest Base Camp trail tucked away beneath Kongde Ri and Thamserku (6608 m) like a horseshoe basin.

Along with the sparkling Himalayas, this town also allows you to take unrivaled pictures of blue-roofed houses, dry rocky cliffs, and the traditional Tibetan market lined up in the street.

We allocate two days in Namche, so the most magical time to shoot the perfect pictures will be early morning at 6 AM when the sun is peeking through the clouds.

The best spot would be the Museum Viewpoint located high above Namche near the Sherpa Culture Museum, where Mount Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam (6812 m), Thamserku, and Kongde Ri will be posing majestically before you.

Also, don’t forget to explore the town streets to photograph the stone alleys, traditional houses, prayer wheels, local markets, and smiling Sherpas.

Best Spot: Museum Viewpoint near Sherpa Culture Museum

Everest View Point Hotel

Everest View Hotel at 3880 m in Syangboche above Namche holds the record in history books not only for being the highest elevated hotel in the world but also for its luxury panorama.

No wonder this hotel makes it to the list of our top 10 photography spots on the Everest Base Camp trek. That’s why we take each guest to this hotel during their acclimatization in Namche, possibly in the morning.

Enjoying a hot tea or coffee, you can just relax on its open terrace and capture Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Nuptse, and Thamserku in a single frame.

We also encourage our guests not to overlook prayer flags, stone walls, or the hotel itself, as adding them as foreground in their picture can add more depth and scale to the images.

Best Spot: Hotel terrace and Balcony

Tengboche Monastery

Tengboche Monastery is one of our best photography spots on the Everest Base Camp trek that combines spiritual significance and natural beauty perfectly.

Protected by the magnificent black pyramid of Ama Dablam, this monastery offers you the best visual harmony between Tibetan architecture and sharp snow peaks.

We generally arrive at the monastery in the afternoon, when you will see monks chanting Tibetan mantras and honking long horns. We need to respect this religious ceremony and therefore should always ask for permission before clicking any photos.

When photographing, do not forget to capture the whitewashed stupa, red monastery walls, prayer wheels and stone chorten along with Ama Dablam mountain to add depth.

Best Spot: Open ground of the Monastery

Nangkartshang Viewpoint at Dingboche

Nangkartshang Viewpoint, aka Nagarjun Viewpoint, in Dingboche is one of the overlooked vantage points on the Everest Base Camp trek.

Many trekkers mistake this hill only for an acclimatization spot; however, from our experience, this ridge at 5083 m altitude rewards the most incredible panorama on the entire trek.

The 3 to 5 hour ascent to the ridge is quite challenging, but it bestows you with uninterrupted visuals of Ama Dablam, Makalu (8485 m), Lhotse, Island Peak (6189 m), Baruntse (7129 m), and the entire Dingboche Village.

Since this natural viewpoint provides excellent spacing between the peaks, we have thus listed Nangkartshang ridge in our top 10 photography spots on the Everest Base Camp trek.

Best Spot: Ridge top

Thukla Pass (Dughla Pass)

Thukla Pass at 4830 m is situated on the trail between Dughla (Thukla) and Lobuche Village along the crest of a steep glacial moraine.

It is not only one of the memorable locations on the Everest Base Camp trek but is also one of the emotional spots that houses stone memorials erected for fallen climbers and Sherpas in the Himalayas.

The route from Thukla to the pass is steep but not too long. The top of the pass is like a plateau covered with stone memorials covered in weathered prayer flags.

Once we reach here, we encourage our guests to take a few moments to show respect and honor the deceased souls.

After offering your respect, you can take a look around you, and suddenly you will find yourself standing against the dramatic backdrop of Pumori (7165 m), Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Khumbutse (6636 m), Lingtren (6714 m), and Lobuche (6119 m) Peaks.

Framing all these peaks and chorten together will produce a deeply moving picture.

Best Spot: Pass Plateau

Everest Base Camp

Everest Base Camp at 5364 m will place you directly at the foot of the planet’s highest mountain, Mount Everest. Of course, you will want to take the perfect photograph here, but you will be surprised to know that Mount Everest will remain hidden behind the black walls of Nuptse Peak.

However, you can photograph the famous Everest Base Camp rock, colorful prayer flags, and the breathtaking Khumbu Icefall. And if you are in the spring season, then your pictures will come alive with hundreds of bright, colorful expedition tents.

We also encourage you to include Sherpa porters, mountaineers, prayer flags, and the vast Khumbu Icefall to add a fascinating dimension to your picture.

Best Spot: Everest Base Camp rock and Khumbu Icefall

Kala Patthar

Kala Patthar at 5545 m is the ultimate photographic highlight of the Everest Base Camp trek. After all, it is the single best natural platform to picture the most complete, close-up view of Mount Everest anywhere on Earth.

Not only Everest, but it is also the best location to capture Nuptse, Pumori, Lingtren, and the vast Khumbu Glacier in one frame. That’s why we never skip an early morning or afternoon hike to Kala Patthar on our Everest Base Camp trek.

Tips for Best Photography in High Altitude

Once you are above 4000 m elevation on the Everest Base Camp trek, you will encounter blowing dust, sub-zero temperatures, high UV rays, and sudden changes in weather.

Therefore, you should know how to prepare your camera gear for such conditions to avoid unnecessary difficulties while photographing. Here are a few practical tips to protect your gear:

Manage Battery Power

At higher elevations of Gorak Shep and Kala Patthar, temperatures often drop below -15°C, which drains your battery in a matter of minutes. Therefore, we advise you to carry spare batteries for your trek and keep them inside your inner jacket pocket.

And, never leave your batteries inside your camera during nights at the teahouse. Instead, sleep with your camera batteries by storing them inside your woolen sock at the bottom of your sleeping bag.

Protect your Camera from Dust

The trail of the Everest Base Camp trek after Namche is extremely dusty, especially when yak caravans pass along the track. Therefore, use a protective camera bag when you are not using your camera. Clean your lens with a simple microfiber cloth.

Choose Sunrise or Sunset for Photographing

The soft light of rising and setting sun often creates the most beautiful lighting for capturing the most dramatic landscape on the trek. It will add depth, texture, and vibrant colors to your pictures that midday sun cannot offer you.

Don’t focus only on the Mountains

Many trekkers on the Everest Base Camp trek mainly focus on Mount Everest and other Himalayan peaks. But there is more to the trail, such as smiling Sherpas, grazing yaks, prayer wheels, colorful monasteries, suspension bridges, and wildlife you may see in the forest.

So remember to include all these components in your picture to complete the story of your Everest Base Camp trek.

Tip from our Guide

As per our expert guide, you should always keep your camera easily accessible so you can take the pictures anytime you feel on the trail. Sometimes simple incidents create the best photographs, such as fluttering prayer flags in the wind or a yak caravan on the bridge.

The Everest Base Camp trek, besides an adventurous journey, is also a photography expedition. You will get new opportunities every day on the trail to capture remarkable photos that will tell the story of your experience.
