Khokana and Bungmati – The twin villages of Bungmati & Khokana date from the 16th century and are located south of Kathmandu, down a rutty road dotted with Chaityas. Bungmati is the winter home of Lord Rato Machhendranath, the protector God of Patan. At Khokana ancient oil presses can be seen at work in village houses. They are twin villages located just 6 kilometers from Patan. Khokana is a small village in which traditional craftsmanship still takes an important role. Villagers can often be seen spinning, winnowing and crushing mustard seeds. Especially the latter is what Khokana is most famous for, it’s mustard oil. The village has a broad street leading into its center. After exploring Khokana we will walk to Bungmati. This is an approximately 20 minute walkthrough on the road dividing the agricultural land. Bungmati, just like Khokana, is a Newari village where traditional lifestyle can be still seen. The village houses & the typical Newari buildings. Before starting our sightseeing tour in Patan we will enjoy a typical lifestyle of people. The best time to visit Bungmati and Khokana is autumn and spring because at that time the whole village looks colorful.
