Cho Oyu Base Camp Trek Tibet Overview

Cho Oyu Base Camp from Tibet is a 2-week-plus-long trip covering a Lhasa city tour, Rongbuk monastery, and Everest (Qomolangma) Base Camp visit. Cho Oyu is the sixth-highest mountain on earth standing at an elevation of 8,201 m above sea level. This alpine Himalaya is also considered one of the easiest peaks to climb above 8,000 meters, and it has the highest success rate as well.

Our journey towards Cho Oyu begins after the scenic flight from Kathmandu, Nepal, to Lhasa, Tibet. After reaching Tibet, we will explore the cities of Lhasa, where Tibetan Buddhism started. The travelers will get to visit significant Buddhist monasteries like Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Sera Monastery, Norbulinka, and many more. We will then drive towards Cho Oyu Chinese Base Camp through the turquoise Yamdrok Lake, spending the night in Shigatse, then Shegar, and further traveling towards the world’s highest monastery, Rongbuk.

After that, we will wander around the Everest Base Camp (Qomolangma) and spend a night there or in Rongbuk, depending on the situation and availability. After that, we will travel towards our beautiful destination, Cho Oyu Chinese Base Camp. En route to the base camp lies the glorious view of the crystal-clear lakes, picture-perfect villages, diverse landscape, enchanting woods, exotic flora and fauna, a chain of the highest Himalayas, and immense terrains and yak pastures as far as one’s eyes can see. The additional highlights of the tour are Pelkor Monastery, Shakya Monastery, and the majestic view of Mt. Shishapangma, Mt. Everest, Mt. Ama Dablam, Mt. Lhotse, and others.

The travelers will hike around the base camp observing the distant ascending route, glaciers, snow-dusted paths, a close view of mountains, rocky cliffs, and enjoy the precious time in the heavenly wilderness of nature. Furthermore, we will also stay overnight at the ancient Tingri valley, experiencing the authentic culture, warm hospitality, and cuisine of the locals. After that, we will return to Lhasa through the same route. Likewise, this trip is also perfect for travelers who wish to climb Mt. Cho Oyu in the future and are traveling to the base camp for acclimatization and experience gaining purpose.

Alternative routes are also available for the Cho Oyu Chinese Base Camp Tour. The travelers can drive from Kathmandu via Trisuli, Dhunche, Rasuwagadi, Kerung/Gerung border, Tingri to the base camp and end the trip by the same route. Similarly, we could also start the trip by flying to Lhasa from Kathmandu and end by driving from Lhasa to Kathmandu or vice versa. If you are traveling in a standard group, an overland trip could be a better option in terms of affordability.

Mount Cho Oyu

Mt. Cho Oyu lies in the Mahalangur Himalayan range, located in the Khumbu region between the Nepal-Tibet border. Cho Oyu means “The Turquoise Goddess” in Tibetan, owing to the sublime view seen when the golden rays of sunshine blend with the beauty of this snow-capped peak. It was first ascended in 1954 by Pasang Dawa Lama, Herbert Tichy, and Sepp Jochler. This 6th-highest mountain is lost heaven. A perfect destination to find your inner peace and harmony. The 360-degree views seen from the summit of the glittering Himalayas will steal your breath away.
