Dolpo and Humla both are regions that have seen very less foreign tourists for several decades and thus have not seen the touch of modernization. These virgin lands have their own beauty and terrific destinations to make you revisit them several times. But you need to understand that Upper Dolpo to Humla Simikot Trek even though being on the western side has to be accessed from Nepalgunj airport.

The Upper Dolpo to Humla Simikot Trek starts from Juphal/Dolpo the rainshadow area(desert), where you can have an ample opportunity to get lost in the surrounding/nature itself and it takes you towards the Dho Tarap where you can find the Gumbas as well as Mane-Chorten. Then it leads to Numala and Bagala Pass where you can see the different variations of landscape and greenery then after towards the mesmerizing Phoksundo Lake respectively. Phoksundo Lake is the deepest lake of Nepal. The color of the Shey Phoksundo Lake changes which provides the icing on the cake. Then after we move on towards Shey Gompa and Saldang where people believe that Tibetan Buddhist came along flying on the back of a snow lion and built the Gompa. Here, the Oscar-nominated movie ‘Caravan‘ written by Eviz valley was filmed.

To reach Dolpo, you need to take a flight from Nepalgunj to Juphal. Apart from the landscape being filled with rivers, gorges, and valleys, the best attraction in the Dolpo region is undoubtedly the Shey Phoksundo National Park and the ancient monastery of Shey Gompa which has observed over 800 years in its lifetime. Not only the national park, but there are also several traditions, lifestyle, and culture followed by the locals of the Dolpo region. After the demise/death of any person, they feed the dead body to the vultures. On a proverb saying ‘feeding other living beings/things after the death too’. The crystal mountain behind the monastery amplified both their beauty. You might even spot a snow leopard or two in this region and can also enjoy the hunt for yarsagumba which supposedly has high medicinal values. One can also have a watch on the historical/ancient beliefs and things such as a stupa, the gompa, and The Humla Region has been opened recently compared to the Dolpo region and has veiled itself from too many foreign tourists. After you have completed your Dolpo Trek you have to catch a flight from Nepalgunj to Simikot, the official hub of Humla district. Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu

Upon your arrival in the Kathmandu airport (TIA), a representative from Himalayan trekkers and transfer to the hotel will greet you. We will be discussing the trek in details and free time of your own.

Day 2: Half-day Kathmandu sightseeing & trek preparation

We will start our guided tour to several of the most historical and spiritual attractions and some of landmarks which are considered as world heritage sites including the historic Durbar Square, the sacred Hindu temple of Pashupatinath, the famous 'Monkey Temple' (Swoyambhunath) and Buddhists shrine (Boudhanath) which is one of the large Stupa in the world. In the afternoon, there will be a pre-trip discussion where we can meet our trek leader and other team members where we will discuss our trek. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 4: Fly to Juphal/ Dolpo & trek to Dunai
35 mins flight & 3-4 hrs trek
Max Altitude: 2,475 m

It's a 35-mins flight to Juphal. Our trek starts, it's an easy trail where you can see Thuli Bheri River, Monasteries, Riverside, landscapes, etc. Then we reach Dunai (2,140 m) which is a small yet beautiful town. Overnight at Dunai.

Day 5: Trek to Saha Tara

FromDunai, we will trek to Saha Tara which is our next overnight staying destination. After passing through some villages on our way down we at last reach Sahar Tara which is popular for Yarchagumba harvesting. Overnight at Saha Tara.

Day 6: Trek to Lahine

From Sahartara we follow a trail along the banks of the river until we reach a large and green valley. Trekking forward from the village of Khani gaon to Lahini we have a chance of meeting the famous musk deer, bounding away in the midst of juniper and pine forest. We camp for the night at Lahini.

Day 7: Trek to Sisaul

From Lahini the trail becomes narrow and adventurous as we walk through areas that are prone to landslide and avalanches. We set up camp at Sisaul which is situated in a grassy area.

Day 8: Trek to Dho Tarap
7-8 hrs

This day is one of the most significant milestones of this trek as it is a difficult and dangerous part of the trek. The valley narrows here. On this trail, we will approach some deep gorges and cross innumerable small bridges. We will follow a path that is carved out of a rocky cliffside. Following such an adventurous trail we will reach Dho Tarap.

Day 9: Acclimatization & exploration around Dho Tarap

This day is dedicated for rest and acclimatization as we are approaching higher altitudes from now on. We will spend this day taking a short walk and hike around the village which as a notable number of chortens, Mani walls and monasteries. The village also offers insight into the mountain life of Nepal, you will get an idea of how hard life is in this rocky areas, where you see people engaged in daily chores such as farming and cattle raising. The quest for water might also surprise you as you see people carrying huge containers of water and climbing up and down!

Day 10: Trek to Numala Base Camp

After having a relaxed time and visiting all the gompas and Chorten in Tarap valley we take a trail that climbs up through grassy meadows filled with wildflowers to reach to Numala base camp. From the base camp, we get a beautiful view of the distant Tibetan mountains and the upper Tarap valley.

Day 11: Trek to Danigar via Numala Pass

Today we will be crossing the Numala Pass and descend towards Poyon Khola till we reach the Bagala Base Camp that is surrounded by big glaciers and blade-shaped rock cliffs. We stop for the night at Danigar (4,510m), a village surrounded by hills that has temporary houses, yak pastures, and terraces. From this point, you have your first glimpse of Topo Peak (4900m). The Norbu Kang Himal sparkles brightly in the background.

Day 12: Trek to Yak Kharka via Bagala pass (5,170m).

We make our way to Yak Kharka via Bagala Pass. The top of the pass is a great vantage point as we can see the massive Kanjiroba Massif from here. After Baga La, the trails turn gently down all the way to Yak Kharka (3,860 m). Yak Kharka literally means the-grazing place of Yaks in the local language.

Day 13: Trek to Shey Phoksundo Lake

The trek to Phoksundo Lake (3600m) via Ringmo village (3641m) takes about seven hours. Ringmo is a small village predominantly inhabited by the Gurung and Thakuri communities. We will move along the flat land passing through pine forests, grassland, terraces, hills, and villages. After some time Phoksundo Lake appears before you in all its glory. Before we reach the final destination of the day, we have to cross a bridge made of wood, resembling wooden bridges of medieval Europe Phoksundo Lake is the deepest lake of Nepal and also the deepest lake found in such a great altitude in the world. The big village on the banks of this lake is quite rich culturally. This area will help you understand more of Tibetan Buddhist culture and its practices that are unique to the mountainous regions of Nepal and some parts of Tibet, as you will visit small chortens and monasteries.

Day 14: Acclimatization & exploration around Shey Phoksundo

Today we explore the area around the magnificent Phoksundo Lake. The lake is most notable for is green color resembling that of turquoise. Ringmo village, which looks like a typical Tibetan village, is scenically nestled in the folds of this area.

It is also home to many beautiful glaciers found near and above the lake area. There are many monasteries (Gompas) and Bon-Po religious sites and we can spend our time visiting some of these. Shey Gompa one of the oldest in all the Himalayan region is believed to date back to the 11th century. Thashung Gompa, one of the popular Gompa located near Phoksundo Lake was built about 900 years ago.

Day 15: Trek to Sallagari/Camp site

After breakfast, we move on to trek from Dolpo to Mustang, it's one of the best trekking trails. It goes along the mesmerizing cliffs, Landscapes, pine forest and chit chat with locals provides an additional touch. Overnight at Sallaghari (the beautiful pine forest).

Day 16: Trek to Kangla/Nangdala Base Camp

After breakfast, we continue our trek to Nangdala Base Camp 4720m. The trail leads us to the opposite side of Tuk Kyaksa River. We walk along the suspension bridge, move across Nangdala High Camp and reach our overnight destination Nangdala base camp.

Day 17: Trek to Shey Gompa via Kangla/Nangdola Pass

Today we trek towards the most beautiful peak of Dolpo. We walk towards the mystical land and reach to the top of Nangdala Pass. As soon as reaching towards the top the view will mesmerize you through its beauty. You can see the different landscapes, vegetation, Chorten, peaks like Kang Chunne and Shey Shikhar. Camp at Shey Gompan(4,200 m).

Day 18: Acclimatization & exploration around Shey Gompa

After your breakfast;you will explore this wonderful destination, visit stupa, monasteries, enjoy the landscape and scenic beauty from that destination. You can have eye watch on the barren and enhancing land of Dolpo. As on the movie 'Himalayan Caravan' by Eric Valli, Sherri Sumdho Gompa was recognized as Thinley's son's gompa.

Day 19: Trek to Saldang via Sela Pass

Today we will start our trek a bit earlier than previous days. We will trek up to Sela La Pass where you can have the views of Kanjiroba, Tibet, Mustang to East and crystal mountains. Then we will stop at Namgung for lunch and move ahead towards Saldang (3,620 m) for overnight stay.

Day 20: Trek to Neng La Base Camp

After warm breakfast, we will march towards Nengla base camp (4790m) for today's overnight stay. As we have to cross the pass tomorrow, we require good rest so, after reaching base camp good sleep with good food is required and provided. Overnight at base camp.

Day 21: Trek to Bhijer via Neng La Pass

We will trek to Bhijer (3,850 m) after crossing the Nengla La pass from where we can enjoy the amazing views of mountains ranges, beautiful valley and wonderful landscape of the surroundings. Overnight at Bhijer.

Day 22: Trek to Pho village via Yambur La

After warm breakfast, we will move towards Pho village which is the next overnight spending destination. But before reaching Pho village, we will cross the next amazing pass called Yambur La (4813m) by enjoying the scenic beauty and varied landscape. Overnight.

Day 23: Trek to Pung Kharka via Nyingma Gyanzen La Pass

Max Altitude: 5,563 m

This is the most difficult and amazing day; as we will be crossing the highest point Nyingma Gyanzen La Pass (5563m) and to walk for longer period of time. After crossing Nyingma Gyanzen La pass, we will trek downhill and reach the Pung Kharka (4,650 m) which is our next overnight staying destination.

Day 24: Trek to Chyandi Khola via Yala La

Today, we will be crossing the Yala La (5414m) after good breakfast and move ahead to Chyandi Khola (4,830m) for overnight stay.

Day 25: Trek to Takla Khola

It will be easier to walk in comparison to previous days; as the walk will be steep and downhill. Although the trail is rough and rocky, you will enjoy the interaction with local, observe the green forest and field. After walking for a good time, you will reach the overnight destination called Takla Khola where you will find your camp.

Day 26: Trek to Thajuchaur via Chyargo La Pass

After warm breakfast, we will trek towards Thajuchaur (4,050m) by crossing the Chyargo La Pass (5150m) for our overnight stay of the day. On the way, we can observe the streams, small settlements and green field with crops like wheat, buckwheat, potato. Overnight at Thajuchaur.

Day 27: Trek to Shilenchaura Kharka

Today's walk will be very much comfortable and easier as we will be climbing down hills through slippery and rough trail just after our good breakfast. With good walk for 6-7 hrs, we will reach our camping site which will be waiting for us with our hygienic food. Overnight at Shilenchaura Kharka.

Day 28: Trek to Mugu Village
3-4 hrs

Today we will have a very comfortable short trek. Just after our breakfast, we will trek to our new spot called Mugu village which will be our overnight staying destination of the day. This small village consists of different ethnic people with their own tradition and culture. We can observe some food as well as cash crops in this village where Brahmins, Gurungs, Tamangs, and others live by sharing their happiness and sorrow. Overnight at Mugu village.

Day 29: Trek to Dani Odar

After warm breakfast, we will say goodbye to Mugu village and move forward towards Dani odar (cave) following the rough and uphill trail. Overnight at Dani odar.

Day 30: Trek to Tanke Khola

Max Altitude: 4,000 m

After comfortable sleep and good breakfast in the morning, we will begin our day trek to reach Tanke Khola which is our next campsite spot. We will be crossing some streams, small settlements, greenfield and forest before we arrive at our overnight destination.

Day 31: Trek to Kangla Chaur
7-8 hrs
Max Altitude: 4,000 m

Although we have to walk for 6-7 hrs this day, it won't be difficult as we will be trekking through good trail today. Just after our breakfast, we will march towards Kangla Chaur for our overnight stay. We can find local children and adults with cheerful and smiling faces on the way to our campsite.

Day 32: Trek to Dadiya

After enjoying warm breakfast with morning sunlight, we will begin our trek following the downhill and rough trail to our next spot called Dadiya where we will have our camp for overnight stay.

Day 33: Trek to Galangna
6-7 hrs
Max Altitude: 3,000 m

As usual, we will finish our breakfast prepared by the staff of Himalayan trekkers and start our trek. Today after walking for 6-7 hrs downhill and some rough trail, we will be at the place called Galangna which is our overnight staying destination of the day.

Day 34: Trek to Nepka
6-7 hrs
Max Altitude: 2,580 m

We will start to walk at 8 am after our breakfast. By leaving Galangna we will march forward to Nepka (another interesting and beautiful destination) for overnight stay. We will be crossing the green forest, a field with crops like maize, wheat, buckwheat and some beautiful settlements too. Overnight at Nepka.

Day 35: Trek to Mathillo Pali

Max Altitude: 2,300 m

Starting our day with good and warm breakfast, we will start our trek to Mathilo Pali by saying goodbye to the beautiful place Nepka. We will be walking for 6-7 hrs following a similar kind of trail to reach our campsite of the day by crossing small settlements, greenfield, and forests. Overnight at Mathilo Pali.

Day 36: Trek to Melchham

Today's overnight destination is Melchham where we will be reaching after 6-7 hrs good walk by crossing very beautiful villages, green paddy field, and forest, meeting interesting local people throughout the trail. Enjoying our campsite in the evening.

Day 37: Trek to Apsia Lek
7-8 hrs
Max Altitude: 3,195 m

Today's walk will be a bit difficult and will be longer as we will be walking for 7-8 hrs, climbing uphill followed by the rough and narrow trail. Just after breakfast, we will leave Melchham and move ahead to a new destination called Apsia Lek (hill) for overnight stay. On the way, you can observe the daily lifestyle and works performed by local people. Overnight at Apsia lek.

Day 38: Trek to Punkha Khola

As soon as completing our breakfast, we will carry our bags and march towards Punkha Khola (our next campsite for overnight stay) leaving the beautiful Apsia Lek. It will be interesting walk as we will be walking through the middle of small settlements following the narrow and rough trail.

Day 39: Trek to Gatte Khola via Margor Bhanjyang
7-8 hrs
Max Altitude: 4,037 m

After good and warm breakfast, we will leave Punkha Khola and move towards Margor Bhanjyang (hillside) (4,037m) where we will take our lunch. To reach Margor Bhanjyang we have to follow the rough trail and climb a hill which will take around 3-4 hrs. During lunchtime, you can enjoy the scenic beauty and views from there. Then, we will hike down to Gatte Khola (2,100 m) where our staff will be preparing camps for overnight stay.

Day 40: Trek to Gagru

we will be trekking the similar kind of rough and narrow trail in first few hours after leaving Gatte Khola. We will be reaching the place called Gagru after good & handsome walk of 6-7 hrs where we will be staying in the camp for overnight.

Day 41: Trek to Simikot

Today is the final day of our trek. As usual, we will complete our breakfast and march towards Simikot which takes around 5-6 hrs to reach there.

Simikot is also headquartered of Humla district where day to day administrative work run with good pace.

Day 42: Flight to Nepalgunj and then Kathmandu respectively
1& 1/2 hrs flight and 30 min drive
Max Altitude: 1,350 m

Today we have one and a half hour scenic flight from Simikot - Nepalgunj, and Nepalgunj - Kathmandu. Since we have different flight schedule so we need to stay some time at Nepalgunj airport for the connecting flight to Kathmandu. We will reach Kathmandu in the afternoon.

Free time of your own. In your free time, you can visit a good spa and massage center to realize your pain.

(Note: Since Simikot lies at the mountainous zone and if we have a weather issue or other technical problems and we do not have a flight on the previous day then we can use this day to fly Kathmandu or if everything goes on our schedule then we can use this day as leisure day).

Similarly, you can use your free time by visiting some of the heritage sites of Kathmandu valley or you can do last minutes souvenir shopping from Nepal to your friends, families, and relatives. In the evening, you will join the Himalayan trekkers' team for farewell dinner with cultural show.

Accommodation

Himalayan Trekkers promises to manage the best, most comfortable and preferable accommodation.

Generally, in cities like Kathmandu and Nepalgunj, we arrange basic three-star facilities. If available, you can opt for a more budget-friendly option or upgrade to a more luxurious hotel by paying a little extra. 

Although all the places might not have all the modern facilities, we will make sure to arrange safe and comfortable accommodation. In general, hygienic and safe tea houses/local lodges/ home-stays with all the basic facilities are arranged. But you can, if possible, personalize according to your preference. 

If your itinerary includes camping or you choose to experience camping during your travel, a proper camping-site will be pre-decided. If required, we also provide the basic equipment which is refundable. Please check the Gear-List for more information.

Meals

Breakfast is usually included with your B&B Accommodation within the cost that is evident.
For other meals in the city, you would have to pay separately. Often in the cities, you can choose from many different cuisines and varied food services. We can always help you find the right place to fit your taste.

In more remote areas, usually, there are not many options. But you can always find hygienic and well-prepared food. Moreover, almost all the meals during the trek are included in the cost. We can help you make changes according to your preference and budget, but only if choices are available!

On top of that, Himalayan Trekkers also organizes Welcome or Farewell Dinners as a symbol of warm greetings.
