Best Season for Lhasa to EBC Tour via Namtso Lake

There are two best seasons for the Lhasa to Everest Base Camp (EBC) tour via Namtso Lake. You can have the best experience during spring and autumn.

The route includes Namtso Lake. It is significantly higher and colder than Lhasa. The travel window is more restricted than a normal Tibet tour.

Spring (April – June): The Awakening

Spring is the best time to see Namtso Lake beginning to melt. You get the best possible view of the turquoise lake against the snow-capped peaks.

Skies remain clear during the spring season. Thus, it gives you excellent views of the Everest North Face.

Days during this season are pleasant and sunny. However, nights at EBC and Namtso are well below freezing.

Autumn (September – October): The Golden Window

Autumn is arguably the most stable weather of the year. The rainy monsoon season ended, leaving behind the air of incredibly crisp air. You find an unbeatable visibility, it’s at its absolute peak.

Your chances of seeing the summit of Everest without cloud cover are high during this season. Roads are dry and safe for a long drive. Shigatse to EBC, and up to the lake.

Seasonal Considerations & "Avoid" Windows

While the warmest time to visit, this is the monsoon season. Clouds often shroud Mount Everest, and heavy rain can occasionally make the high-altitude dirt roads to Namtso muddy or difficult.

Generally not recommended for this specific route. The high passes leading to Namtso are frequently closed due to heavy snow.

While the views are clear, the wind at EBC is ferocious. The temperatures can drop to -20°C.

Lhasa to EBC Tour via Namtso Lake Difficulty

Lhasa to EBC Tour via Namtso Lake is a moderate journey. The primary challenge of this trek is the altitude. This is a drive tour rather than a long-distance trek.
