Bhutan Bumdra Trek - 8 days Overview

The Bhutan Bumdra Trek is an engaging one that takes one through some of the most picturesque terrains, culturally endearing locales, and the opportunity to experience spirituality.

Where your thrilling Himalayan adventure begins, you will tour the region’s many culturally and historically important sites, such as the Rinpung Dzong and the National Museum of Paro (Ta Dzong).

The trek starts from Sangchen Choekhor, a beautiful monastery where tourists get to behold exquisite views of Paro.

Blue pine, oak, and rhododendron forests and the fresh atmosphere, stone-paved animal paths and spectacular views of high mountains, ancient temples and meditation caves.

You gain altitude gradually and reach Bumdra, a beautiful campsite (3,800m) surrounded with simplicity and natural beauty that you would only see from the stars.

On the third day, there will be a ridge hike you can either go to the easy one or the moderate one.

The first leads you to the Bumdra Sky Burial Site(4200m),which provides a vast view of the mountains.

The second path is slightly longer and can only be taken up to the height of 4,600 meters thus viewing is even more spectacular.

The journey ends with the descent to the famous site of Paro Taktsang Monastery – it is a monastery located on a hill, and all that is visible from beneath is the steep cliff face and the monastery clinging to it.

Associated with religious worship, it is one of the most recognized sites in Bhutan.

This itinerary is an introduction to Bhutan, guiding you from Paro to the beautiful trek of the monastery and back to Paro with the impressions of the views, the monastic thoughts that influenced Bhutan and the peculiarities of customs.

The 5-day Bhutan Bumdra Trek is perfect for anyone who would like to have a shorter trek experience, but would like to be immersing themselves in breathtaking sceneries, historical sites and spiritual encounters.

It is a remarkable journey for people willing to see the calm and the size of the Bhutanese Himalayas.

Major attractions of the Bumdra Trek

The Bumdra Trek is not merely a walk across the Himalayan region and it provides an experience of nature, culture and spirituality all together.

Here are the major attractions that make the trek a unique and unforgettable experience:

Sangchhen Choekkor:

Sangchhen Choekkor is a religious shrine and monastery where the famous Buddhist master Gyelwa Shacha Rinchen shares the philosophy of Buddhism.

The artistic work is shown in the carving work on the walls and beams which makes the place have a peaceful atmosphere of a monastery.

Located on a strategic location, Sangchhen Choekkor offers an excellent view of Paro Valley.

The countryside area is beautiful, featuring vast expanses of greenery and hilly terrains, which are beautiful to capture on camera and also set the tone for the hike.

The monastery itself is not only religious but it also has a great cultural significance as a tourist point where visitors can experience the beauty of Bhutan.

Bumdra Monastery and Bumdra Sky Burial:

The Bumdra Monastery, which is located on a mountain top overlooking a sea of clouds from a distance,e has a spiritual and historical value.

This monastery is situated slightly above the Bumdra Campsite and presents one of the most enthralling sights of Paro Valley, other mountain ranges, and virgin greenery.

That is well over 12,000 feet or 3,880 meters, and is an absolute dream for trekking enthusiasts.

The place truly does refer to a Monastery, and visitors state that it looks magical as it sits high on a cliff overlooking a valley; it is so peaceful.

Close by is the Bumdra Sky Burial ground, which is another significant spiritual attraction.

Located at more than 4,000 meters (13,123 feet) above sea level, this holy ground is 1 1-hour walk from the monastery.

The Sky Burial is a burial place for children who died below the age of nine years, and is regarded as one of the most holy burial practices in Bhutan.

People should avoid, for instance, entering sanctuaries with a feeling of disrespect because such a place is sacred to the inhabitants of that region.

This stop provides a captivating glimpse into Bhutan’s culture and religious beliefs.

Paro Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest):

Anyone who has heard of Bhutan cannot fail to mention the famous Paro Taktsang, more commonly known as the Tiger’s Nest Monastery.

The monastery is constructed from rocks spread across the side of a cliff, making it seem as if it has risen from the ground.

It is not only an engineering invention but also a holy place of worship with high religious importance for Vajrayana Buddhists.

Tradition has it that Guru Padmasambhava soared on the back of a tiger to this site and therefore, is as sacred as could be in Bhutan.

This monastery is located after a three-hour walk from the nearest motorable road and offers a splendid view of Paro Valley.

Paro City:

Being one of the oldest cities in Bhutan, situated at the end of the Paro valley, Paro is often the first city a tourist sees.

It has the only international airport in Bhutan and boasts of Infrastructure that is a mix of modernity and true Bhutanese style.

The buildings, monasteries, and houses in Paro depict the historical and cultural flavor of Bhutanese architecture.

Around the city main attractions are different religious places, including Kitchu temple, Drugyel temple, Dzong, and the famous Tachog Temple, making it a culturally important city to visit.

Being a nature-developed spiritual destination, Paro is the perfect introduction to the scenic beauty of Bhutan.

Other Religious Sites in Paro:

In addition to Paro Taktsang, there are several other religious places located in this city which people from different parts of the world visit as tourists or pilgrims.

Among them are Sangchoekhor, Tachog Temple, Tenchen Choeling Nunnery and Kila Goenpa amongst others.

Every one of these places is spiritual and holds historical importance and is reflective of Bhutan’s cultural heritage.

Paro is a worthwhile destination for anyone traveling to Bhutan because of the area’s striking spiritual density.

Best time for the Bumdra Trek

The 5-day Bumdra Trek can be done at any time of the year but the most favorable months to undertake this trek are during March to May and September to November.

Spring (March to May):

The spring season is characterized by warmer temperatures, it is not rainy and hence is appropriate for trekking.

This season, the ground is green with a lot of beautiful flowers, and it is regarded as a time when the wildflowers bloom.

September is relatively warm, which makes it ideal for trekking, and the vistas of Paro Valley and the adjacent hills are breathtaking.

Autumn (September to November):

Another suitable time to go on the Bumdra Trek is during autumn. Besides, the weather is quite ideal during this period with little or no rainfall and temperatures are also stable.

The colourful foliage of trees in the autumn makes the scenery even more beautiful than it could be.

It is also the best time for viewing expansive scenery as the skies are clearer compared to other months.

However, it is possible to make the trek at any time of the year, but these two seasons will provide a comfortable climate and suitable conditions to enjoy the sceneries and visit sacred places on the trail.

Generally, it is a moderate level trek suitable for all those people who are in reasonably good health and normal fitness levels.

Although it does not involve climbing the rocks, the hike involves steep slopes and rough terrains with an elevation gain of over 1000m on the second day.

Here are some key factors that contribute to the difficulty:

Duration: The trek actually takes 3 days but each day involves 5-7 hours of trekking on average. The gradient – It is fairly slow but can be slightly steep during the ascent.

Weather Conditions: The weather is generally unpredictable when you are up in the higher altitude regions. Even though the trek can be undertaken all year round, the temperatures during the night tend to drop and this makes the trek somewhat more difficult in the colder months.

In conclusion, the Bumdra Trek offers a fantastic moderate trekking experience to the peaks and through Rhododendrons, crosses through beautiful monasteries, and provides an opportunity to get acquainted with the wonders of nature and Bhutanese traditions.
