Soi Yaksa Trek Bhutan takes you to one of the most well-preserved heritage of the world. It shows you both the cultural aspect as well as natural beauty. There are a large number of biological diversity in the environment, which certainly make your trip amusing.

This is the trek to the 2nd highest virgin peak of Tibet, Mount Jumolhari. This is one of the highest trekking in South Asia. Besides the great trekking experience, this trek also provides you an insight into the nomadic Tibetan style life. You can even see the activities of Yak herders and farmers living in the high Himalayas.

This 11 day Soi Yaksa trekking begins with a flight to Paro. Shortly after landing at Paro International Airport, you are taken for sightseeing in the city. The next day you go for the excursion in the Tiger’s Nest Monastery, commonly known as Paro Taktsang. With the start of the trek, you will be enjoying the environment in the Himalayan land by staying overnight in tented camp.  You will cross several mountain highs passes which will surely check your adrenaline rush power. 

Besides the great trekking experience, it is also a nice trip to understand the Bhutanese culture and traditions that remained hidden from the outside world until the mid-1970s.

(Note: Paro Taktsang is a sacred monastery built in the remembrance of Guru Padmasambhava. The locals believe that he had meditated here.)

Itinerary

Arrival on: Paro.

Departure from: Paro.

Day 1

Arrival at Paro.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

After arrival at Paro, a representative from Himalayan trekkers will greet, meet and transfer you to the hotel where you will be staying overnight.

During the flight, you will experience breathtaking views of Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga, and other famous Himalayan peaks. Overnight.

Accommodation: Hotel Estimated Walking Distance: 30 min private drive.

Day 2

Hike to Tiger nest monastery (3190m).

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

After a warm and nice breakfast served at the hotel, we will hike up the 4200 steps to the Tiger's Nest, locally known as the Taktsang Monastery. This monastery has been the identification of Bhutan for a long time because of its religious significance and also because of its location. The Mahayana Buddhist believes that the first Dalai Lama, Padmasambhava flew on a back of a tigress to her for Meditation.

While coming down we will have lunch halfway down the hill and continue to Paro.

Overnight.

Accommodation: Hotel Estimated Walking Distance: 3-4 hrs hike and 30 min drive.

Day 3

Drive to Drugyel Dzong and trek to Shana (2870m).

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

We take a short drive of 17 km to Drugyal Dzong then start trekking to Shana.

The trail gradually goes up through the lush green forest, apple farms, small settlements and a nice view of the meadows and surrounding hills. After walking for almost 3 hours we reach Gunitsawa which is bordering town with Tibet.

Further walking up for another couple of hours we reach Shana, for overnight.

Accommodation: Tented camp/ local lodges. Estimated Walking Distance: 3 hrs drive and 4 hrs trek.

Day 4

Trek to Thangkha (3750m).

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

With a good breakfast, we will follow the trail of the Paro river and cross pine and oak forest. With a good walk for a couple of hours, we will reach Sojourn for our delicious lunch.

We then cross the bridge and ascend the forest of rhododendron to reach our campsite at Thangkha for overnight stay.

Day 5

Trek to Jangothang (4040m).

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

After starting the trip, we walk for an hour and cross the army camp which is followed by a climb of about 30 minutes taking us to the hilltop with a nice view of snow-capped mountains on the northern side.

Another 3 hours ups and down and we reach the Yak Herds camp, where the lunch will be served. Further walking a couple of hours from where we reach our camping site, Jangothang from where the famous Mt. Jumolhari, as well as the Jichu Drake peak, are seen from a nearby distance.

Day 6

Acclimatization and excursion in Jangothang.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

As it is a day to acclimatize, you can explore around and take a good rest.

We will take a 3 and a half hours to walk to a place with the view of Jichu Drake Peak. We will have lunch there and come back to our camp.

Accommodation: Tented camp. Estimated Walking Distance: 4-5 hrs hike.

Day 7

Trek to Dhumzo (3800m) via Bonte La Pass (4890m).

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Today we will be at the highest point of the trek. After enjoying delicious breakfast prepared by a team of Himalayan trekkers, we move towards north leading the last settlement in the valley and descend down to Tshopu Lake (4380m). After observing some duck playing on the lake, we will climb a slope and move forward to the Bonte La pass. 

After crossing Bonte La pass, the highest point of the trek, we descend down following the trail to Dhumzo where we will stay overnight in our camp.

Day 8

Trek to Thombu Shong (4180m) via Takhung La pass (4520m).

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

We have a short walk compared to earlier days. Walking past the halfway we reach the Tak-hung La pass (4520m), then a descend for a short while and walking ups and down for one more hour we reach Thombu Shong (4180 m).

There you can see some summer huts of the Yak herders who come to find grass for their yaks during summer when it is warmer and with plenty of green grass for the cattle’s.

Overnight stay at Thombu Shong.

Accommodation: Tented camp. Estimated Walking Distance: 4-5 hrs

Day 9

Trek to Shana (2870m) via Thombu La pass (4380m).

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

We start the day after breakfast and approach the base of the Thombu La pass (4380m). After crossing the pass, we descend on the other side and continue our trek on the flat land for a while and then continuously descend to reach Gunitsawa. 

We will stay around by searching good area to build our camp for overnight stay.

Accommodation: Tented camp. Estimated Walking Distance: 4-5 hrs

Day 10

Trek to Drugyel Dzong and drive back to Paro via Thimpu.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

As it is the final day of our trek, we can start our trek a bit later too.

After crossing the blue pine forest along the Paro river, farmhouses; we will reach Drugyel Dzong where our vehicle will be waiting for us to transfer us to the hotel.

Free time on your own. In the evening, enjoying farewell dinner with representative of Himalayan trekkers.

Overnight.

(Note: As you will have a good time during the return from Shana to Drugyel Dzong, you can go for Thimpu sightseeing too)

Day 11

Departure from land of 'Thunder dragons'.

A representative of Himalayan trekkers will assist and transfer you to the airport for connecting flights back to your home town.

Himalayan Trekkers promises to manage the best, most comfortable and preferable accommodation.

Generally, in cities like Paro, we arrange basic three-star facilities. If available, you can opt for a more budget-friendly option or upgrade to a more luxurious hotel by paying a little extra. 

Although all the places might not have all the modern facilities, we will make sure to arrange safe and comfortable accommodation. In general, hygienic and safe tea houses/local lodges/ home-stays with all the basic facilities are arranged. But you can, if possible, personalize according to your preference. 

If your itinerary includes camping or you choose to experience camping during your travel, a proper camping-site will be pre-decided. If required, we also provide the basic equipment which is refundable. Please check the Gear-List and Requirement List for more information.

Meals

Breakfast is usually included with your B&B Accommodation within the cost that is evident.
For other meals in the city, you would have to pay separately. Often in the cities, you can choose from many different cuisines and varied food services. We can always help you find the right place to fit your taste.

In more remote areas, usually, there are not many options. But you can always find hygienic and well-prepared food. Moreover, almost all the meals during the trek are included in the cost. We can help you make changes according to your preference and budget, but only if choices are available!
On top of that, Himalayan Trekkers also organizes Welcome and Farewell Dinners as a symbol of warm greetings.
