Phoksundo Lake Trek Overview

Phoksundo Lake Trek, in the mid-western region of Nepal, has become a very popular tourist attraction as it offers trekkers its scenic landscape views, stunning mountains, and hypnotic beauty.

Among the 75 districts of Nepal, Dolpo is the largest, and the region is also depicted for its unique landscape and exotic culture

Phoksundo Lake is an alpine freshwater lake at an elevation of 3,611 m. The area cover by the lake is 1.91 sq miles. The depth of the lake is 145 m. This lake looks more stunning with the reflection of the Kanjiroba mountain range.

The lake is a sacred pilgrimage site for Buddhists as well as followers of the Bon religion.

This short trek to Phoksundo lake is between moderate and difficult in difficulty level, which means you need to walk around 5-6 hrs a day on average and due to the gradual rise in elevation and remoteness. Nevertheless, we always walk before we run!

Parts of the trail are protected areas and comes under the Shey-Phoksundo national park. Some common species of wildlife fauna found in this region include but not limited to are snow leopard, musk deer, blue sheep, great Tibetan sheep, Himalayan tahr.

Your 12 days Phoksundo Trek in Dolpo begins after a flight to Juphal from Nepalgunj and goes around Ringo and other villagers before reaching the Turquoise lake of Phoksundo. Tented camping will add more of an exotic experience to this trek.

Day 1: Arrive Kathmandu (1350m)
30 min drive

Our representative from Himalayan Trekkers will meet and greet you at the airport then transfer to the hotel.

Day 2: Explore Kathmandu & Trek preparation
3-4 Hrs

We will spend this day exploring Kathmandu and discover its amazing historical and cultural monuments like Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhanath Stupa, Kathmandu Durbar Square, and Swayambhunath Temple. 

You will meet your crewmembers today and get more information on the trek and its operation. If you have any queries, our trek leader will help you.

Day 3: Fly to Nepalgunj
50 mins flight

The flight to Nepalgunj offers a panoramic view of the Himalayas as we fly west of Kathmandu. You will see the three majestic mountains Manaslu, Dhaulagiri, and Annapurna from air if the weather is right. 

Upon reaching the hotel at Nepalgunj,  will relax and get ready for tomorrow’s mountain flight to Juphal.

Day 4: Fly to Juphal (2475 m) & Trek to Dunai (2145m)
35 mins flight & 3 hrs trek

We will take an early morning flight to Juphal, in which we fly North West towards the Himalayas. We will fly deep into the mountain valleys before reaching Juphal, this 35-minute-long flight will offer a wonderful experience of high altitude flying as we fly close to the mountains. 

After landing in Juphal, we will start heading towards Dunai. We start climbing southeast gradually towards the Thulo Bheri Valley followed by an hour-long walk through maize fields to reach the village of Kalagaonda. 

We will continue to walk along the Bheri river bank and cross the Roop Ghar before reaching Dunai (2145 m).

Day 5: Trek to Chhepka (2670 m)
6-7 hrs trek

We start the day after breakfast and start descending to cross the Bheri River and almost after an hour we will reach the small town of Sulighat. Further, one hour of the walk will lead us to the checkpoint of Shey Phoksundo National Park Check Post. 

After completing the formalities at the checkpoint, we will further walk above the rocky trail above the serpentine Suli Ghad River. As the trail stretches higher through the series of hemp trees we arrive at Kageni. 

As we gain altitude the vegetation we see mainly includes Walnuts and Maple trees the closeness to Tibetan culture can be experienced from here onwards as we start to see chortens and fluttering prayer flags that are symbolic of Tibetan Buddhism. 

We will walk past the village of Shyanta (2520 m) and a further one and a half hours of the climb takes us to the village of Chhepka.

Day 6: Trek to Jharana Hotel
5-6 Hrs trek

We rise early in the morning and after breakfast make our way towards Jharana hotel. The trail climbs through a forest of big cedars and on a winter settlement used by the people of Ringmo village. 

The route climbs steadily through open country to an elevation of 3370 m. We get a close view of a spectacular 330 m – high waterfall, the highest in Nepal, and a faraway view of Phoksundo lake. We stop for the night at Jharana (waterfall) Hotel.

Day 7: Trek to Ringo (3460 m)
5-6 hrs trek

Today is one of the most interesting day as we reach the village of Ringmo today. It is quite an interesting village with Bon culture. Today as we make our way to Ringmo, we make a steep descend through birch forests to the upper reaches of the Phoksundo Khola. 

We cross a bridge and follow a trail north to the ranger station at Phoksundo Lake. We continue to the shores of the lake near the point where the Phoksundo River flows out of the lake. 

The final push through the Phoksundo River gully, we emerge to the yak filled meadows of Ringmo, a popular Bon Village in the region.

Day 8: Explore Phoksundo Lake
3-4 Hrs

After breakfast, we spend time exploring the lake, the major attraction of this package. Along with the exploration of the Ringmo village, we will also pay a visit to Tshowa (the lake-shore Bon Monastery) which is situated on the top of a ridge above the turquoise lake. 

This monastery is more than 900 years old and is quite remarkable. Then we drop down to Phoksundo Lake along steep-sided cliffs. 

The lake is famous for its magnificent turquoise color and spectacular scenery. Besides that, we will also explore some settlements with Bon-Po culture and local traditions involving the Dolpo people.

Day 9: Trek back to Chhepka (2520 m)
6-7 Hrs trek

We will back track the same trail to reach the village of Chhepka.

Day 10: Trek back to Juphal
6 Hrs Trek

This will be a quite relaxed walking for about 6 hours as we go down to Juphal. We will recall going up as we are going down and try to take it easy as going down will not be as physically demanding as going up.

Day 11: Fly to Nepalgunj & afternoon flight to Kathmandu

We will leave the hotel at Juphal early in the morning to catch the flight to Kathmandu via Nepalgunj.

Although all the places might not have all the modern facilities, we will make sure to arrange safe and comfortable accommodation. In general, hygienic and safe tea houses/local lodges/ home-stays with all the basic facilities are arranged. But you can, if possible, personalize according to your preference.

Meals

Breakfast is usually included with your B&B Accommodation within the cost that is evident.
For other meals in the city, you would have to pay separately. Often in the cities, you can choose from many different cuisines and varied food services. We can always help you find the right place to fit your taste.

In more remote areas, usually, there are not many options. But you can always find hygienic and well-prepared food. Moreover, almost all the meals during the trek are included in the cost. We can help you make changes according to your preference and budget, but only if choices are available!

On top of that, Himalayan Trekkers also organizes Welcome and Farewell Dinners as a symbol of warm greetings.
