Strenuous treks require good physical condition and acclimatization. If some problems seem to appear, you have to walk down and take some hot drinks or soup ( + rest). Regarding the land area, Bhutan is a small country. But, it is among the few countries, which have been able to preserve the environment and the pristine nature. Apart from the conservation of natural beauty, the people here have also preserved their culture and tradition.

Situated in the lap of the Himalayas, Bhutan has 10 natural heritage sites. Besides that, there are so many Dzong and Palaces and monasteries. The commencing point of this trip is from Paro, one of the beautiful cities of Bhutan. You visit places like Tiger’s Nest Monastery in one day, and the trip to Drugyal Dzong the next day, during your stay in Paro.

Tiger’s Nest Monastery is locally known as Paro Taktsang. It is uniquely located by the side of the cliff. The locals believe that Guru Padmasambhava came to this place to meditate. While he came he rode on a tiger and meditated for 3 years, 3 months, 3 weeks, 3 days and 3 hours continuously. He was successful in bringing the Buddhist religion in Bhutan and this has happened in the 8th century.

After visiting the dzong, you begin your trek towards Shana, followed by Sio Thangthangkha, Jangothang, Lingshi, Shodu, Barshong, Dolam Kencho, and finally Dodena. On the trail, you can see beautiful mountains, lush green forests, and awe-inspiring landscapes. Even though Bhutan is a small country as per geography it is the country that protects the environment. That means it is a very beautiful country with no pollution. Apart from that, you get to see age-old monasteries that are built beautifully.

Monasteries are the sacred place especially for the people following the Buddhists Religion. Thus, you will find many Dzongs and monasteries during your trip to Bhutan.

Itinerary

Arrival on: Paro.

Departure from: Paro

Day 1

Arrival at Paro.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

After arrival at Paro, a representative from Himalayan trekkers will greet, meet and transfer you to the hotel where you will be staying overnight.

During the flight, you will experience breathtaking views of Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga, and other famous Himalayan peaks. Overnight.

Accommodation: Hotel Estimated Walking Distance: 30 min private drive.

Day 2

Hike to Tiger nest monastery (3190m).

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

After a warm and nice breakfast served at the hotel, we will hike up the 4200 steps to the Tiger's Nest, locally known as the Taktsang Monastery. This monastery has been the identification of Bhutan for a long time because of its religious significance and also because of its location. The Mahayana Buddhist believes that the first Dalai Lama, Padmasambhava flew on a back of a tigress to her for Meditation.

While coming down we will have lunch halfway down the hill and continue to Paro.

Accommodation: Hotel Estimated Walking Distance: 3-4 hrs hike and 30 min drive.

Day 3

Drive to Drugyel Dzong and trek to Sharna.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

We take a short drive of 17 km to Drugyal Dzong then start trekking to Sharna. The trail gradually goes up through a lush green forest, apple farms, small settlements and a nice view of the meadows and surrounding hills. After walking for almost 3 hours we reach Gunitsawa which is bordering town with Tibet.

Further walking up for another couple of hours we reach Sharna, our overnight campsite.

Accommodation: Tented camp/ local lodges. Estimated Walking Distance: 2 hrs drive and 4-5 hrs trek.

Day 4

Trek to Sio Thangthangkha (3750m).

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

After breakfast, we start the walk along the Paro River through the green forest. The walk is full of ups and downs until we reach our campsite for overnight stay.

Accommodation: Tented camp. Estimated Walking Distance: 6-7 hrs

Day 5

Trek to Jangothang (4,040m).

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

After starting the trip, we walk for an hour and cross the army camp which is followed by a climb of about 30 minutes taking us to the hilltop with a nice view of snow-capped mountains on the northern side.

Another 3 hours ups and down and we reach the Yak Herds camp, where the lunch will be served. Further walking a couple of hours from where we reach our camping site, Jangothang from where the famous Mt. Jumolhari, as well as the Jichu Drake peak, are seen from a nearby distance.

Day 6

Trek to Lingshi (4000m).

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

We start climbing up to a ridge after breakfast. From the top, you can see the Jumolhari smiling at you. One of the best moments of the trip is the time spent here in the middle of greenery with white snow peaks in front of you.

After spending a short time here we go down for a while and walk in the flat land for some time before climbing up the Ngye La pass (4,700m), one of the highest points of the trip. After a brief rest at the pass, we descend continuously until reaching our campsite at Lingshi for overnight stay.

Day 7

Trek to Shodu (4,100m).

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

The day starts with a short climb towards a Chorten on a hilltop and further walk down to the Mo Chhu valley. We will walk on the east of a barren valley and make a short climb up to the other end of the Mo Chhu.

The trail further goes up for a couple of hours until reaching the highest point of the trek Yeli La pass (4,820m). Mountain peaks such as Jumolhari, Gangchen Ta, Tshering Gang, and Masang Gang are visible from the top of the pass.

We gradually go down another 600m and stop at our campsite at Shodu for overnight stay.

Accommodation: Tented camp. Estimated Walking Distance: 7-8 hrs.

Day 8

Trek to Barshong (3,710m).

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

We start the day walking along the Thimphu River and the trail gradually goes down through a forest of pine trees.

The walk down to Barshong Dzong will be interesting as we will pass small settlements, Chorten and grab our lunch in between besides the riverside.

Overnight at Barshong.

Accommodation: Tented camp/ local lodges. Estimated Walking Distance: 5-6 hrs

Day 9

Trek to Dolam Kencho (3,600m).

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Today walk up to Dolam will be comfortable and easier. we cover a distance of around 15 km. We walk in the middle of the thick jungle of rhododendron, birch, and conifers and go down for a long time until reaching the Thimphu River.

Another one hour of a climb through the hilly trail takes us to our campsite at Dolam Kencho. An occasional view of the mountains makes this day exciting.

Overnight.

Accommodation: Hotel/ local lodge/ tented camp. Estimated Walking Distance: 4-5 hrs

Day 10

Trek to Dodena and drive to Thimpu (2350m).

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

After a good breakfast, we will gradually descent to Dodena to get into the jeep that drives us to Thimphu.

This is the last day of the trek. In the evening relax at Thimpu.

Overnight.

Accommodation: Hotel Estimated Walking Distance: 3 hrs trek and an hour plus drive.

Day 11

Thimpu sightseeing.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

After breakfast, you will have guided sightseeing of Thimpu. You will explore the King’s Memorial Chorten, Nunnery Temple, Changgangkha Monastery, Majestic Thimphu Dzong, etc. Besides that, we also go to the Central zoo to see the animals over there and among them the Takin, a goat-antelope is a major attraction as it is the national animal of Bhutan.

In the afternoon visit the Weekend market famous for all kinds of local products ranging from handicrafts to vegetables. You can also visit the radio tower on a hilltop, which offers a panoramic view of Thimpu city.

Day 12

Drive to Punakha and explore.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

We start the day in the morning with a drive to Punakha via Dochu La (3,100m). This town derives its name from the river on whose banks it is situated, the Punakha River.

We will make a brief visit to the fertility temple known as Chimi Lhakhang. You can receive blessings of fertility with a phallus (Symbolic representation of male sexual organ) from the Lama. Upon arrival at Punakha, we will have lunch and visit the Punakha Zhong in the evening.

Day 13

Scenic drive to Paro and explore.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Today, you will have a short scenic drive to Paro from Punakha.

In Paro, you will be exploring the National Museum, many shrines like Drugyel Dzong, Kyichi Lhakhang, Rinpung Dzong, and farmhouse by experiencing the rural culture and lifestyle of farmers.

Overnight.

Day 14

Departure from land of 'Thunder dragons'.

A representative of Himalayan trekkers will assist and transfer you to the airport for connecting flights back to your home town.

Accommodation

Himalayan Trekkers promises to manage the best, most comfortable and preferable accommodation.

Generally, in cities like Paro, Thimpu, and Punakha we arrange basic three-star facilities. If available, you can opt for a more budget-friendly option or upgrade to a more luxurious hotel by paying a little extra. 

Although all the places might not have all the modern facilities, we will make sure to arrange safe and comfortable accommodation. In general, hygienic and safe tea houses/local lodges/ home-stays with all the basic facilities are arranged. But you can, if possible, personalize according to your preference. 

If your itinerary includes camping or you choose to experience camping during your travel, a proper camping-site will be pre-decided. If required, we also provide the basic equipment which is refundable. Please check the Gear-List and Requirement List for more information.

Meals

Breakfast is usually included with your B&B Accommodation within the cost that is evident.
For other meals in the city, you would have to pay separately. Often in the cities, you can choose from many different cuisines and varied food services. We can always help you find the right place to fit your taste.

In more remote areas, usually, there are not many options. But you can always find hygienic and well-prepared food. Moreover, almost all the meals during the trek are included in the cost. We can help you make changes according to your preference and budget, but only if choices are available!
On top of that, Himalayan Trekkers also organizes Welcome and Farewell Dinners as a symbol of warm greetings.
