Soi Yaksa Trek in Bhutan takes you to one of the most well preserved heritages of the world, culturally and naturally. This is the trek to the 2nd highest virgin peak in the world, Mount Jumolhari. This is one of the highest trekking in South Asia. Besides the great trekking experience, this trek also provides you insight of the nomadic Tibetan style life and the activities of Yak herders and farmers living in the high Himalayas. This 10 day Soi Yaksa trekking begins with a flight to Paro and then goes to the base camp of the Jumolhari and ends after 7 days of walk. Besides the great trekking experience it is also a nice trip to understand the Bhutanese culture and traditions that remained hidden from the outside world until the mid of 1970’s.

Itinerary in Detail

Day 01: Arrival at Bhutan, Paro International Airport and sightseeing in the afternoon (2250m).
The flight into Bhutan is one of the most interesting Mountain flights in the world. You will be welcomed by the representative of Adventure mission Nepal treks and expedition and transferred to the hotel. After a brief rest and lunch we will head towards the Ta Dzong, the National museum of Bhutan. After the visit to the Museum we take a short walk to the Rinpung Dzong often described as the fort with heaps of Jewel. Khichu Lhakhang is the next place we visit. It is the oldest monument in the small kingdom of Bhutan. By the late afternoon we reach the Drugyal Dzong (Bhutan Victory Fort) built around the mid 17th century in the memory of the Bhutanese victory over the Tibetan invaders.

Day 02: Excursion to the Tigers Nest (3190m).
After a warm and nice breakfast served at the hotel we will hike up the 4200 steps to the Tiger's Nest, locally known as the Taktsang Monastery. This monastery has been the identification of Bhutan since a long time because of its religious significance and also because of its location. The Mahayani Buddhist believes that the first dalai lama, Padmasamvav flied on a back of a tigress to her for Meditation. While coming down we will have lunch at halfway down the hill and continue to Paro.

Day 03: Drive to Drugyal Dzong and start trekking to Shana.
We take a short drive of 17 km to Drugyal Dzong then start trekking to Shana. The trail gradually goes up through lush green forest, apple farms, small settlements and nice view of the meadows and surrounding hills. After walking for almost 3 hours we reach Gunitsawa which is bordering town with Tibet. Further walking up for another couple of hours we reach Shana, our overnight campsite.

Day 04: Trek to Sio Thangthangkha (3750m)
After breakfast we start the walk along the Paro River through the green forest. The walk is full of ups and down and we walk for almost 6 hours by the end of the day.

Day 05: Trek to Jangothang (4,040m)
This is one of the longest days in the trek. After starting the trip we walk for and cross the army camp which is followed by a climb of about 30 minutes taking us to the hill top with a nice view of snow capped mountains in the northern side. Another 3 hours ups and down and we reach the Yak Herds camp, where the lunch will be served. Furhter walking couple of hours from there we reach our camping site, Jangothang from where the famous Mt. Jumolhari as well as the Jichu Drake peak are seen in a not so far distance..

Day 06: Trek to Dhumzo (3800m) via Bonte la pass (4890m)
After breakfast we go down a little bit and then meet the Paro River crossing and cross the river to reach the Tshophu Lake (4380 meters), famous for the population of ruddy-shel ducks. These ducks who stick with the same partner for life are used as synonyms for couples who have spent a long time together in the eastern world. Walking an hour ahead of the lake we reach the base of the Bonte La pass.  After a hard climb up we reach the top offering view of the Jumolhari and other mountain peaks. Our overnight camp is near by the base of the Pass on the other side.

Day 07: Trek to Thombu Shong (4180 m)
We have a short walk of about 4 and half hours today. Walking past the half way we reach the Takhung La  pass situated at 4520 m. then a descend for a short while and walking ups and down for one more hour we reach  Thombu Shong (4180 m). There you can see some summer huts of the Yak herders who come to find grass for their yaks during summer when it is warmer and with plenty of green grass for the cattle’s.

Day 08: Trek to Shana Zampa (2730 m)
From Thombu Shang to Zampa the total distance is little more than 12 km and will take us 5 hours to complete. We start the day after breakfast and approach the base of the Thombu La (4380 m). After crossing the pass we descend on the other side and continue in flat land for a while and then continuously descend to reach Gunitsawa (2730 m) nearby it is the camp site at Shana Zampa.

Day 09: Trek back to Drugyal Dzong.
A short walk to Drug Yul Dzong and then we will take our drive of 17 km to Paro.

Day 10: Final Departure.
Flights from Bhutan are scheduled early in the morning as only Druk air flies to and from Bhutan. So don’t forget to pack breakfast if you don’t have time to eat it at the hotel. Bye from Bhutan.
